Program Timeline

LATE AUGUST - EARLY SEPTEMBER
  • Complete aquarium set-up.
  • Utilize TIC Curriculum Map to lay out lessons for the year. (Register for PA TIC virtual programs!)
  • Join PA TIC Facebook Group. 
EARLY OCTOBER - NOVEMBER
  • Initiate Aquarium Pre-Cycling: Watch the Aquarium Pre-Cycling Process Here
  • Begin recording water quality data.
  • Continue to connect with PA TIC teachers and program partners via PA TIC Facebook Group. ​​
EARLY NOVEMBER - JANUARY
  • Initiate Aquarium Salt Treatment prior to fish arrival. Find guidelines in the PA TIC Aquarium Resource Guide.
  • Begin developing release day activity plans.
  • Continue to connect with PA TIC teachers and program partners via PA TIC Facebook Group. ​​​
EARLY JANUARY - FEBRUARY
  • PA TIC Egg Arrival!
  • Sac fry within 2 weeks of arrival.
  • Begin observation, monitoring, and recording your “Coldwater Ecosystem.”
  • Develop a water change schedule. Consult the PA TIC Aquarium Resource Guide
  • Continue planning field experiences and/or release day experiences. 
EARLY FEBRUARY - MARCH
  • Life stage: Swim-up Fry (feeding begins): Consult the PA TIC Aquarium Resource Guide for feeding guidelines.
  • Continue to conduct preventative and scheduled maintenance as needed.
  • Continue planning field experiences and/or release day experiences. 
  • Continue to register for PA TIC virtual program opportunities.
EARLY MARCH - MAY
  • Life Stage: Fingerlings
  • Continue to conduct preventative and scheduled maintenance as needed.
  • Implement field experiences and/or release day experiences, releasing trout in an Approved Stream (stocked trout waters).
  • PATU TIC Existing Program Grant application opens and closes (More information on PATU Grant page).
  • PA TIC End-of-Year Report and Online Registration Form sent to program participants. (More information on Required Forms page.)
JUNE - AUGUST
  • By August 31: Complete PA TIC End-of-Year Report and, if participating in next school year, complete Online Registration Form. More information on Required Forms page.
  • By June or July: All equipment ordered using the Ordering Your Equipment handout to ensure necessary items are shipped for complete aquarium set-up in late August - early September.
  • New TIC teachers attend TIC workshop (multiple dates).
  • Conduct aquarium end-of-year cleanup.
  • Prepare for upcoming TIC school year.

Made possible through a unique partnership between the Pennsylvania Council of Trout Unlimited (PATU) and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC), Pennsylvania Trout In the Classroom (PA TIC) is an interdisciplinary environmental education program in which students learn about current and past impacts, management, and protection and enhancement opportunities of Pennsylvania's coldwater resources, while raising trout in the classroom. ​
