Writing a Press Release


A press release is a simple written statement to the media about an event or your organization. Here are some simple steps to follow when writing a release

1. Write a catchy headline- brief, clear, and to the point

    Tip: Headlines are written in bold and typically larger than the press release text

2. Write the body of the press release- your total press release should be no more than 4 paragraphs

        - It should be wrote how you would like to see it appear in the news story

    The first paragraph should have:

        1. Who: your organizations is and contact information

        2. What: you are doing or did

        3. Where: the event took place

        4. When: the event happened

        5. Why: you conducted the event 

        6. How: did all of this come together (how was the program funded and who is involved)

    Tip: Avoid using long sentences and jargon that the general public may not be aware of

 

3. The last paragraph should include information about you and your organization!

Tips & Hints

    - Establish a list of media contacts in your area (TV stations, radio stations, blogs, websites, etc.)

    - Always send a photo of the event along with the release (include a caption and photo credit)
