PA Trout in the Classroom - About Us

Getting Started

If you are interested in implementing Trout In the Classroom (TIC), please follow these steps:

STEP 1: LEARN ABOUT TIC

STEP 2: PARTNER UP

Partnerships enhance TIC programs by strengthening the community connection. Partners provide extra technical assistance, provide programming, and often expose students to local watershed projects. All classrooms are encouraged to partner with a conservation organization (Trout Unlimited chapters, watershed associations, conservation districts, etc.)

STEP 3: SECURE FUNDING

Initial program costs = $1,000-$1,500. These funds help to purchase all equipment necessary to transform a 55 gallon aquarium into a mini-coldwater ecosystem.

  • Replacement equipment costs for program continuation = $150.00 to $250.00. These funds help purchase filter sponges, filter media, water quality test kit, etc. for succeeding years.
  • PATU Grants: PA Trout Unlimited offers two grants for the TIC program. The first one is a Start-Up grant, this helps to provide funding for all of the equipment nessasary to start a program. The second type of grant is an existing program grant, this is a matching grant. This grants provides funding for field trips, classroom supplies, and replacement equipment.
  • Additional Funding Opportunities: There are many more oppertunities for funding besides a program partner or a school. There are a lot of grant specifically for teachers related to environmental education and conservation.
  • Equipment List : Here you will find a list of equipment that all Trout in the Classroom setups must have to sustain the program. This is helpful when deciding if you want to start a TIC in your classroom.

STEP 4: REGISTER AS A TIC PARTICIPANT

  • The teacher and partnering organization must collaboratively complete the online registration form for their classroom. As a TIC participant, the classroom will receive brook trout eggs, trout food, curriculum resources, and technical support.
  • Registration is currently closed for the 2011-2012 school year

STEP 5: ATTEND TIC WORKSHOP

All new TIC participants must attend a TIC workshop sponsored by PATU and PFBC. Attending teachers are eligible for Act 48 hours. This workshop introduces the teachers and partners to the equipment, resources, and program activities. This workshop is avaliable to teachers usually during the month of June.
